J. Newt Scott

J. Newt & Ruby

These are various family photos of the families of J. Newt and Ruby L. Scott.  If any are mislabeled, please let me know.  Some, I only had the descriptions on the back of the pictures to go by and sometimes they were not real clear.

This photo was taken of  Ruby Woods Scott (middle, wife of J. Newt Scott) and her two sisters, Bessie (left, 6/29/1876 - 5/22/1952) and Birdie (right, 9/20/1880 - 12/21/1952).  I believe the photo was taken in front at the "Old Woods Place", home of John Alexander & Olliff Elizabeth Melton Woods.  The year the photo was taken was not marked on the back of the photo..

Several people have identified this location as the Bryson ranch.  Jack (son of Elbert) says he remembers the house when he and his older 3 brothers lived with J. Newt & Ruby for a while.  He remembers having ice cream socials on the front porch.  He also said he has a faint memory of Uncle Doss hanging him from his overalls from a limb on the oak tree.

In the summer of 1940, during the time of the annual JNS Reunion, it was decided among the seven children to build a small house for J. Newt & Ruby.  It was to be built on Delbert & Tine's property outside of Sidney, TX.  It was agreed that those children living away would buy the materials, and those who still lived nearby would built the house.  The house was built when the crop was gathered in 1940 and J. Newt & Ruby moved into their small three room house that their children had built for them.  At this time J. Newt was officially retired from farming.
