William Turney Scott (Bill), was born in Brown County, Texas on Nov. 8,
1895. Bill married Carrie Sarah Carson (known as Kay) in Comanche, Texas on Jan. 23, 1922. This union produced
five children of which two died as infants: Oakalona Juanita Scott; Ira Eugene Scott; Rudolph Ross Scott (Jan. 7, 1929
- Jan. 9, 1929); Melba Lois Scott; Truman Dude Scott (May 21, 1934 - May 21, 1934).
April of 1917, Congress declared war against Germany and her allies, "to
make the world safe for democracy". Congress also passed the Selective Service Act requiring all male citizens between
the ages of 21 and 31 to register for military service. The first registeration was held June 30, 1917, and Bill was
required to register. He was inducted into the Army in either Sept. or Oct. of 1917. Not long after being inducted
into the Army, Bill got sick with the measles; this was immediately followed with a case of pneumonia. This was about
the first of December of 1917. Bill was stationed at Camp Travis in San Antonio, TX, and his father (Newt) went to San
Antonio to check on his son. Bill was very sick and had to have an operation on one of his lungs. He did recover
and his father returned home just before Christmas. Around the first of Feb. 1918, Bill's health problems returned and
once again his father traveled to San Antonio to be with his son. Bill was still sick and in the hospital, but had gotten
well enough to be granted a sick leave in the summer of 1918. Bill received a medical discharge from the Army in 1919.
He stayed at home about a year, working at the cottin gins in the fall and threshing machines in the summer. He was
a ginner and a seperator man. It is believed (by Coley's recollections) that he went to Stockdale during the fall of
1920 and remained there until the fall of 1921 when he returned home.
Bill died on Dec. 20,1937 and was buried in Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood
on Dec. 22, 1937. Carrie Sarah Carson (Kay) Scott was born on December 5, 1900 in Mills County, Texas and
died at the age of 73 on June 26, 1974, and was also buried in Greenleaf Cemetary. Kay was the sister of Eula
V. Carson (Tine) who later married Bill's younger brother Delbert.
